Wood is the oldest and most natural material in boat building. Unlike GRP boats, wooden and teak boats require more care because wood can absorb or release moisture, causing it to either swell or shrink. As wood works, the paint and wood coating must provide sufficient flexibility to protect the wood from moisture and rot in the long term.

Teak has also always been a very popular material in boatbuilding for deck planking as well as for interior and exterior finishing. Naturally containing oil, teak does not rot and is particularly resilient thanks to the silica it also contains.
